Noisy wheels unbalanced move a rotten wooden cart.
Panels of wood discolored and growing parasitic life.
Traveling down every street,
followed by a shadow of blight.
The low ring of a bell,
struck with each stride,
it cuts through.
The call for the dead.
Doors open and bodies are dragged out.
Corpse after corpse heaved onto the cart,
piling too high for most to reach.
Something vile seeps out of a few,
spilling on their loved ones' shoulders.
This is a necessary service.
A cleansing that would be hazardous to most.
Without the cart brought to every home,
the rot would climb and the blight would spread.
By midday the sun heats flesh that births a stench that would repel most.
Already the cart is full.
The wood frame creaks.
Its wheels sink into the mud,
and the mule struggles to pull.
The day's work is done,
the route has met its end,
ignoring the cries of those with guests past their welcome.

By the time of the next traveling,
the stack of bodies will be twice as high.
Today's survivors sitting in the company of the rotten.
The road home is long and isolated.
Who would follow one who is cloaked in black,
masked as a raven,
and lives among death?
The cart passes by an abysmal pit,
if it were seen by a commoner,
they would remark of its great depth.
The cart does not stop and no bodies are dropped below.
Instead its wheels tread toward home,
where the passengers will be put to better use.

Some decorate the rooms.
Some fill a lonely bed.
Some are used in ritual,
to prolong the life of this contagion.
Perhaps it is knowledge of the truth.
Perhaps it is a longing for a short life.
Perhaps it is sheer ego that adds protection.
The apathy adds a strength that won't forever last.
These are joyous times.
The villages thin and flood with tears and the sick.
The floorboards of home flood with fodder and company.
How log before the poison sinks in?
